Ozil surpasses Klinsmann to set Premier League record

The Arsenal star’s finish on Monday afternoon earned him a spot atop the goalscoring charts for Germans in the English top flight

Mesut Ozil made a bit of history with his goal on Monday as the Arsenal midfielder became the most prolific German in Premier League history.

Ozil scored just before halftime in Monday’s clash with Leicester City, tying the match at 1-1 with a fine first-time finish following a 31st minute Hector Bellerin own goal.

With the finish, Ozil scored the 30th goal of his Premier League career, earning him sole possession of the top spot of the scoring charts for Germans in league history.

The midfielder previously held the top spot alongside Uwe Rosler and Jurgen Klinsmann, who each scored 29 times during their stints in England’s top flight.

Klinsmann’s initial stint with Tottenham produced the best season goalscoring season for a German with 21 league goals during a memorable 1994-95 campaign that is still remembered as one of the best in club history.

He followed that up in 1997-98 when he returned to the club for a short-term stint following moves to Bayern Munich and Sampdoria.

Rosler scored 29 goals for Manchester City between 1993 and 1996 with a high of 15 in 1994-95 before the club was relegated out of the Premier League one season later.

He returned to the English top flight as a member of Southampton in 2000, but failed to find the back of the net in 24 league matches.

Rounding out the top five are Robert Huth (19 goals), Lukas Podolski (19) and Michael Ballack (17).

In total, 32 different Germans have scored at least one goal in Premier League history.

Ozil’s finish on Monday keeps up a good run of form for the Arsenal midfielder, who has now scored three times in his last four Premier League matches, as many as he bagged in his previous 22 appearances in the league.

The recent run puts him on pace to match his best goalscoring season of eight league goals in 2016-17 after firing four just a year ago.
